Healthcare Burnout Prevention: How to Reignite Your Team on the Brink

As a healthcare speaker, author, and relatability expert, I help teams step away from the edge of burnout and build better connections— with their peers, leadership, and patients.

The healthcare industry has always been challenging. But in recent years, hospitals, clinics, and offices across the country have seen an unprecedented surge in healthcare workers leaving their jobs. Doctors, nurses, support staff— from what I’ve seen, it appears no position is immune from the growing staffing crisis.

Waves of healthcare workers are walking out. Here’s why…

Healthcare workers are overworked and stretched thin. That creates high levels of burnout and dissatisfaction— and even impacts their mental health.

By one estimate, 55% of healthcare workers are experiencing feelings of burnout. But can I be honest with you? I think the true number is much higher.

No human is designed to withstand long hours, high stress situations, and emotionally taxing work for the long haul. And staffing shortages only worsen this problem.

I recently read a stat from The Association of American Medical Colleges. They estimate we’ll be short as many as 139,000 physicians by the year 2033. Not to mention the huge gap in nurses and medical support staff we’re already facing! It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find qualified personnel, which doubles the workload on your loyal staff.

High patient expectations put even more stress on healthcare staff. The demand for immediate attention and quick solutions adds to the pressure your healthcare workers experience on a daily basis.

I’ve seen this scenario play out across several medical teams I’ve worked with, and I know how the story ends— as your patients’ frustrations grow, your team’s job satisfaction shrinks.

That’s why healthcare burnout prevention is more critical than ever.

These are the tell-tale signs of healthcare workers on the brink.

As a healthcare speaker, I’ve worked with medical teams and wellness companies across the country. And these same early burnout warning signs come up again and again.

The first is employee exhaustion. Low energy around the clinic, incomplete tasks, and frequent breaks may suggest your team is running on empty.

The next common sign of impending burnout is growing tension— among your team members, or between your employees and leadership. High stress + building exhaustion is a recipe for blowups. If you notice your healthcare staff lashing out, becoming defensive, struggling to communicate calmly, or pushing back against leadership initiatives, that’s a sign it’s time to skip straight to the tips below!

One of the last signs I see among healthcare teams on the brink of widespread burnout is complete disconnection. When members of your healthcare staff become disconnected from their work and peers, lack interest in work activities, and shut down social interactions, that’s a strong sign they’re on the edge of quitting. Consider this Threat Level: Midnight.

These healthcare burnout solutions can reignite a team on the edge.

If these early burnout signs sound familiar, you’ve got to act fast. Because if you take active steps to improve your working environment, you have the chance to hold onto your most valuable talent.

1. Listen to your healthcare workers’ needs.

The first step to reigniting your healthcare team is to truly listen to their needs and concerns. Leadership has to cross the aisle and take time to hear what their teams are experiencing.

I think of active listening as the key that unlocks the next level in a relationship. Because by actively listening to the concerns of your team members— and addressing them with action— you can help your employees feel truly heard and valued. And that goes a long way towards boosting morale!

2. Offer flexibility, where possible.

I get it— you may not be able to increase resources or add staff right now, but you can take steps to give your team on the brink a little more flexibility.

One way to do this is by offering extra mental health days to give your healthcare workers time to recharge. We all need a bit of “me-time” now and then— especially in times of added stress! I know the afternoons I’ve taken away from my work to rest and reset have been the days that gave me the most energy to keep moving forward. And your team is no different.

3. Create a culture of wellness.

I love to see healthcare companies empower their staff to pursue the same wellness they encourage in their patients. Bonus benefits like gym memberships, healthier food options in the breakroom, on-site quiet rooms, and yoga classes at lunch or after-hours— these are great (and not-so-expensive!) ways to promote better health.

4. Focus on relationships, not just revenue.

Building meaningful relationships with your healthcare staff has been shown to improve job satisfaction because it puts a friendly face on company leadership. When your team knows who you are and what you’re about, and when you show understanding and empathy, you’ll have an easier time creating an engaged and positive work environment.
